arduously

/ˈɑɹdʒuəsli/ adv

in an arduous manner

Word Origin From Latin arduus 'steep, difficult'. Arduously means in a difficult, laborious manner. The root arduus might be from PIE *h₂erd- 'high, to grow', related to arbor (tree) and even ardent (burning, originally 'high, rising'? Actually ardent from ardere 'to burn', different root). But arduus gives us arduous. So arduously is literally 'steeply' — like climbing a steep hill.
