wistfully

/ˈwɪstfəɫi/ adv

In a wistful manner.

Word Origin Wistfully comes from wistful, which is from wistly (intently) + -ful, but ultimately from Old English witan 'to know.' The idea is that wistful originally meant 'with close attention, knowing,' then shifted to 'yearning, pensive.' The PIE root *weid- 'to see, know' also gives us wise, wit, and vision. So wistfully is looking with longing, as if trying to see something.
