unfathomably

/ʌnfˈæðəməbli/ adv

In an unfathomable manner; beyond understanding.

Word Origin A fathom was originally the span of your outstretched arms — about six feet — used to measure the depth of water. So unfathomable literally means 'un-embraceable,' something so deep you can't wrap your arms around it. The PIE root *peth₂- 'to spread' also gives us patent (spread open) and petal (spread leaf). Unfathomably deep is a great image: you can almost see the sailor dropping a line that never hits bottom.
