shoeless

/ˈʃuləs/ adj

Without shoes; not wearing shoes

Word Origin Shoe comes from Proto-Germanic skōhaz, from PIE *skeuk- 'to cover.' Shoeless means without shoes. The -less suffix from Proto-Germanic lausaz 'free from, devoid of' also gives us countless other -less words: homeless, fearless, etc. The PIE *leu- 'to loosen, divide' also underlies loose and loss. So shoeless is literally 'free from foot coverings.'
