Word Origin From Greek 'para' (beside) and 'sitos' (food) — literally 'beside the food'. In ancient Greece, a 'parasitos' was a person who ate at another's table, a dinner guest who flattered for meals. The word evolved to mean an organism that lives off another. The suffix -ic makes it an adjective, and -al another adjective layer: parasitical. The same para- prefix appears in parallel (beside each other) and paradox (contrary to opinion). So a parasite is one who sits beside your food.
