ectoderm
/ˈɛktoʊdˌɜm/ noun B2The **ectoderm** is the outermost of the three primary germ layers in an early embryo. It fashions the skin, the nervous system, and everything that hangs off them. During development the ectoderm folds and differentiates, sprouting the epidermis, hair follicles, and the entire central and peripheral nervous system, including brain and spinal cord. Its cells also become specialized sensory receptors and the enamel of teeth, showing how a single embryonic sheet can produce both a protective coat and the wiring that runs beneath it.
