downstate
/ˈdaʊnˌsteɪt/ adj**Downstate** describes the part of a state that lies toward the south or lower elevation, often the area surrounding a major city. In everyday speech it points to the more urban or coastal region, as opposed to the inland interior. The word is especially common in the United States, where New York, Illinois and California use it to contrast with “upstate.” It works as an adjective (“downstate traffic”) or an adverb (“traveling downstate”).
