cynically

/ˈsɪnɪkəɫi/, /ˈsɪnɪkɫi/ adv C1 ✓

in a cynical manner

Word Origin From Greek kynikos, meaning 'dog-like' — the Cynic philosophers were called that because they lived like dogs, rejecting social conventions. So cynically means 'in a distrustful, sneering way,' like a Cynic philosopher. The root kyon 'dog' also gives us canine and cynosure (originally 'dog's tail,' now something that guides). The PIE *kwon- is the root for 'dog' across many languages. So when you act cynically, you're channeling your inner Diogenes, the philosopher who lived in a barrel and barked at passersby.
