Word Origin From Old English blæc 'black,' which came from Proto-Germanic *blakaz 'burned' — the original idea was something scorched or charred. A blackener is someone or something that makes things black, like a soot-blackener. The PIE root *bhel- meant 'to shine, burn,' which is surprising because it also gave us bleach (to make white) and blank (white, shining).
