Word Origin The past tense of rewind, literally 'wound again.' The verb wind (to coil) comes from Old English windan, which also gives us unwind and winding. The re- prefix adds the sense of doing it again, as in redo or replay. Interestingly, wound (the injury) is a completely different word, but here it's just the past form of wind.
