otitis

/oʊˈtaɪ.tɪs/ noun C1

inflammation of the ear

Word Origin Otitis is inflammation of the ear. From Greek 'ous' (ear) and '-itis' (inflammation). The root 'ot-' gives us otic, otology, otoscope, parotid (near the ear). The suffix -itis is used in many medical terms: arthritis, hepatitis, bronchitis. So otitis is literally 'ear inflammation.'
