methane

/ˈmɛˌθeɪn/ noun B2

**Methane** is a colorless, odorless gas that burns with a clean blue flame. It is the simplest hydrocarbon, a single carbon atom bonded to four hydrogens. As the chief component of natural gas, it powers stoves, furnaces, and power plants. Beyond its utility, methane is a potent greenhouse gas, trapping heat about 28 times more efficiently than carbon dioxide over a century. It bubbles up from wetlands, seeps out of the Earth’s crust, and belches out of ruminant stomachs, so you’ll find it in marshes, fossil‑fuel fields, and a cow’s last sigh. Engineers monitor methane leaks because even a tiny hole can turn a quiet field into a climate‑concern.

Word Origin Methane gets its name from Greek methy 'wine' and hyle 'wood' — literally 'wood wine'. It was named because it's the gas produced by distilling wood. The root methy also gives us methyl, methanol, and mead (the honey wine). So methane is the spirit of wood.
