mailroom

/ˈmeɪɫˌɹum/ noun

A room used for receiving and (usually) sending mail.

Word Origin Mail comes from Frankish malha 'bag, pouch' — originally, mail was the bag that carried letters, then the letters themselves. Room from Proto-Germanic rūmaz 'space.' So a mailroom is the room where mail (bags of letters) is handled. The root of room also gives us roomy, roommate, and bedroom. Mail's root also gives us mailbag and airmail.
