iodize

/ˈaɪədˌaɪz/ verb

To treat or react with iodine.

Word Origin From Greek 'ion' meaning violet (the color) and 'eidos' meaning form. Iodine was named for the violet color of its vapor. To iodize means to treat with iodine. The root 'eidos' also gives us 'idea' (the form of something in the mind) and 'video' (I see, from the same PIE root *weid- meaning to see). So iodize is literally to give something the violet form.
