alkalinize

/ˈælkəlˌaɪnaɪz/ verb

To convert, or be converted, to an alkali

Word Origin From Arabic al-qalī 'the ashes' (of saltwort plants) — alkali originally meant the ashes used in soap-making, and alkalinize means to make something alkaline. The Arabic word came through medieval Latin, and the Greek -ize suffix 'to make' turns it into a verb. The same root gives us alkaline, alkaloid, and alkalosis.
