Word Origin Leucocyte (or leukocyte) is a white blood cell, from Greek leukos 'white' and kytos 'cell' — literally 'white cell.' The root leukos gives us leukemia (white blood disease) and leucine (a white amino acid). Kytos originally meant 'hollow vessel,' and now -cyte is the standard suffix for cells: erythrocyte (red cell), thrombocyte (clotting cell). The PIE root *leuk- 'light, brightness' also gives us light, lucid, and elucidate.
