Word Origin Lapful comes from lap, from Old English 'læppa' meaning the skirt or flap of a garment—the part that folds over your knees when you sit. So a lapful is as much as your lap can hold. The same root gives us laptop (a computer for your lap) and lapdog (a small dog that sits in your lap). The suffix -ful from Proto-Germanic 'fullaz' simply means 'full of.'
