intrapulmonary

/ˈɪntɹəpˌʌlmənˌɛɹi/ adj

Within the material of the lungs

Word Origin Intrapulmonary is a medical term combining Latin intra- 'within' and pulmonary, from pulmo 'lung.' So it's literally 'within the lungs.' The root pulmo is related to PIE *pleu- 'to flow, float' (lungs float in water?), and gives us pulmonology (lung study) and extrapulmonary (outside the lungs). Intra- contrasts with inter- 'between': intranet vs. internet.
