excretive

/ɛkskɹˈɛɾɪv/ adj

Having the power of excreting, or promoting excretion.

Word Origin From Latin ex- 'out' and cernere 'to sift, separate' — so excrete literally means 'sift out,' to separate and discharge waste. Excretive describes that process. The root cernere also gives us discern (separate apart), concern (sift together), secret (sifted aside), and certain (sifted, decided). The PIE root *krei- 'to sieve' is behind crisis and critic — moments of sifting.
