ebonite

/ˈɛb.əˌnaɪt/ noun C1

**Ebonite** is a hard, black form of rubber produced by intense vulcanisation. The process locks the polymer chains into a rigid lattice, giving the material a glossy, ebony‑like appearance. Its firmness makes it ideal for objects that must keep their shape, such as pipe stems, bowling balls, and electrical insulators. Because the vulcanisation is taken to an extreme, ebonite remains stable under heat and resists oil and chemical attack, which is why early telegraph and radio components often employed it. The name echoes the dark wood it resembles, and vintage toy manufacturers prized it for its durability and ease of carving. Though modern plastics have largely displaced it, ebonite still enjoys a niche among craftsmen and collectors who appreciate its classic heft and tactile feel.

Word Origin From ebony (ultimately from Egyptian hbny) plus the Greek suffix -ites 'made of'. Ebonite is a hard rubber that imitates ebony wood. The root also gives us ebonize (to make something look like ebony) and ebonics.
